When I wanted to make a huge change in my life back in 1998 in my one-bedroom apartment in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Kentucky fit the bill. From urban to rural, I bought a 27-acre farm and went on my new adventure that included dogs, cats, horses and a new husband. I went back to school for my BFA from Eastern Kentucky University and came out with a degree in ceramics and metal-smithing in 2009.

Currently, I concentrate on two directions to keep me on my toes. I make fine art sculpture in clay and natural materials and I also make pottery that I sell at my stand-alone website and shop at www.teahorsestudio.com and here on Etsy. My work focuses on organic textures and primal marks. I am fascinated with our origins, prehistorically and biologically. I use a lot of animal imagery, particularly horses The drawings and paintings in the caves of Chauvet, Lascaux and others bring me such joy and have influenced my pottery surface treatment in many ways, not just the drawings themselves but the types of firings, the forms and shapes and so on. For me, looking at cave art inspires a sense of awe and wonder about who made that art? Who painted those gestures? They are so balanced, beautiful, artistic and ancient yet contemporary in feel. It's fascinating to imagine that the hands that created that art existed over 30,000 years ago–yet I can relate to the image in front of me so easily. In that moment, the gap of time is closed and a connection is made to my unknown ancestors–they were not so different than me after all.
I work out of my studio on my farm using an electric kiln but I also maintain ties with fellow potters in Irvine, Kentucky just south and east of Lexington in prime horse country. This allows me to indulge in wood and soda-firings from time to time; great community events with some fantastic pots! I use both stoneware and a stoneware/porcelain mix for my clay body. I love carving, marking and textures. I cannot help but inject my weird and quirky nature into my pieces along with my dry sense of humor from time to time. I hope you enjoy it, too!
